Typical Hopkins: at this writing the baseball team and lacrosse team are ranked #1, and there's no link to athletics on the JHU home page.

Favorite pro team

[Pittsburgh Steelers]

When Roger Staubach was inducted into the Hall of Fame, it was one of the lowest days of my life. Staubach is a talented passer and ball handler, but under the Cowboys' system he never once called a play. Every play came in from the sidelines. Essentially, Staubach was Tom Landy's obedient employee.

In contrast to this corporate quarterback, Terry Bradshaw was a complete quarterback. You never knew what play he was going to call, but one thing you did know: if your team was up by 6 with 2 minutes left and Bradshaw had the ball, you were fixin' to have a real bad day. It's some consolation to reflect back on the times that Bradshaw humiliated Staubach (and Landry, and the whole Cowboys coaching staff). In fact, it brings a warm smile to my face. And a few years later the NFL redeemed itself by naming Terry to the Hall.

Steelers fans do not like Dallas. We don't like Cleveland either, even after the game of musical chairs. I figure, if they call themselves the Browns now, that's good enough for me to hate them.

Here's an excerpt from an interview with Steelers top draft choice, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger:

Growing up in Findlay, Ohio did you grow up a Browns fan?

No, I did not.... I was not a Browns fan.

Good mastery of fundamentals from the kid.

And Cincinnati. I hate them too unless they roll over and die — which, I'm happy to say, they've been very obliging about in recent years. Thank you, Cincinnati.

Is there a team in the NFL that I don't hate (apart from my Steelers, of course)? What a foolish question. Of course there is. If you don't play the Steelers this year, then this year I don't hate you. See? I'm a reasonable man. But if you're playing the Steelers, well, you made that choice, and you deserve the punishment the Steelers will give you.

Another low point in my life was when Bill Cowher looked at Kordell Stewart and decided that, just because he threw to the guys with the wrong colored jerseys, he might be another Terry Bradshaw. And then he decided, what the heck, we don't really need a quarterback. We Steeler fans call this "the years of agony" and although the signs are good, we aren't out of the valley yet.

We will endure. But remember, Steeler fans seldom forgive. And they never forget.
